“I felt at peace almost instantly, like I had stepped into a room where I didn't have to pretend, apologise, or shrink myself.”
Erica Tikitiki-Brooks, a mum of two, walked into Dress for Success Hamilton carrying not only her hopes and dreams but also the dreams of her children, whānau and the future she wanted to create for them.
Initially, she felt slightly nervous. She didn't know if she belonged or was ready to take her next step.
But as soon as she walked into the dressing room she felt, “kindness wrapped around me like a warm blanket”.
On her first fitting prior to her interview, she looked in the mirror and “felt truly seen”, and saw who she wished she could be.
Erica said the stylists helped her unlock the inner belief, strength, and confidence within her, something she’d never been able to find alone.
This confidence and belief moved Erica through her interview, helping her land her dream job as an IPS (Intentional Peer Support) worker supporting whaiora into meaningful employment.
Erica said she now gets to do what Dress for Success did for her. Finding the potential and strength in the people she serves and helping them believe they are capable of creating the future they deserve.
Erica reflected on going back to celebrate with the Dress for Success Hamilton team after she got the job, seeing the pride in their eyes and the joy in their voices. Erica knew at that moment her life wasn't just changing for her, but her family too.
She said receiving her capsule wardrobe was more than just receiving clothes, she described it as ‘laughter, connection, encouragement, and joy’.
“Having a team who believed so strongly in me meant I could believe in myself and the future I was stepping into.
“Each piece I wear reminds me of those moments and who I am becoming, which is absolutely at the heart of what Dress for Success aims to do.”
Erica described Dress for Success Hamilton as an organisation that is ready to lift you, dress you, and walk beside you, so you can run.
We couldn't be more honoured to dress clients like Erica and help them step into a future that brings them courage and strength.
